Kazan
Kazan is a color photobook by Mayumi Hosokura that sets the human body beside rocks, trees and minerals. Emaho Magazine calls it her first solo publication.
Artbeat Publishers issued it in 2012 as a paperback in a magazine-like format with embossed scribbling on the cover. The book carries no text. Emaho quotes Hosokura saying that her relationship with nature has not changed, and that nature “is and will stay beautiful and scary at the same time.” Foam magazine had chosen the Kazan series for its Talent issue in 2011.
Hosokura was born in Kyoto in 1979. She took a degree in literature at Ritsumeikan University in 2002 and one in photography at Nihon University College of Art in 2005. Her work is in the collection of Foam Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam. Blindspot Gallery lists Crystal Love Starlight (Tycoon Books, 2014) and Transparency Is the New Mystery (MACK, 2016) among her later books.
