Private Rooms by Fred Hüning

Private Rooms

by Fred Hüning
Peperoni Books · 2015 · Thread-stitched softcover

Private Rooms collects stills Fred Hüning pulled from video clips uploaded to Youporn by private users, cropped down to the domestic space around the subject rather than the subject itself.

Hüning's crops move past the point the clips were made for, isolating a bedspread, a shelf of belongings, a doorframe, so that what remains reads as a study of ordinary rooms rather than the acts recorded in them; the people who appear register more through their unguarded domestic surroundings than through explicit content, an effect the book's text connects to the quiet vulnerability of Sophie Calle's The Sleepers. Peperoni Books published the seventeen-image book in an edition of 150 numbered and signed copies, a thread-stitched softcover with accompanying text by Hüning.

Hüning is a German photographer whose work frequently returns to appropriated and found imagery sourced from the internet; Private Rooms extends that interest to material never intended to be seen as photography at all.
