Briney Breezes
Briney Breezes pairs Charles Johnstone's black-and-white topographies with Aaron McElroy's colour interiors, and the two bodies of work together describe a place that never existed built out of one that did.
It is the second title in Series 1, S U N's experimental run of two-artist books issued in editions of 100. Johnstone's contribution comes from an older series photographed between 2004 and 2006; McElroy's, often sexually charged and shot close in, was made in the year before publication. The contrast between the surveyed landscape and the interior carries the sequence across 72 pages, printed digital offset and Japanese stab bound in a linen soft cover.
Johnstone is a New York photographer and publisher whose books include Libby and The Girl in the Fifth Floor Walk-Up, both built around a single recurring subject. McElroy (b. 1978) has published more than a dozen monographs, among them The Devil May Care and Reds, working between abstraction and the nude in pictures he keeps deliberately anonymous and open-ended.
