Die Buchstaben

by Anselm Kiefer
Wienand · 2012

Our civilization would be inconceivable without letters. In a meaningful way, words, sentences and scripts are strung together, especially the printed word that shapes our existence.

Anselm Kiefer deals with this power of the word in his work The Letters, to which this publication is dedicated. Sunflowers that grow out of a printing machine, rolls of film that spill on the floor, letters that are scattered on the floor combine to create a space-filling installation. The artist develops an ambiguous symbiosis from the surprising combination of technical object and natural organism. Numerous large-format detailed images enable intensive immersion in this complex, poetic spatial staging.
