Double Portraits
Double Portraits pairs two large-format portraits of the same sitter taken moments apart, to show what happens to a face once its owner becomes a subject.
The first frame of each pair follows from a relationship built between photographer and sitter. The second comes a few seconds later, uncontrolled, and records some movement or changed expression. Klauke shot everything on an 8 × 10 inch Deardorff camera. The pairs fall into three chapters: Spitalfields in London around 2000, New York after 9/11, and Southern California, finished in 2005. DBA published the book in 2013 in an edition of 750 numbered copies, with an introduction by León Krempel and a design by Lena Mahr. The pages are printed on one side and bound with a Japanese fore-edge fold, so the book lies flat.
Klauke, based in London, studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California and has photographed for The New York Times Magazine, French Vogue and Vanity Fair. Solo shows have taken the work to London, Paris, Tokyo, Basel and Lugano. He self-published his first book, The 28 Faces of Corinne Dolle, in 2011.
