The Grand Tour
The Grand Tour is Kasia Klimpel's book of paper landscapes that were photographed, given map coordinates and slipped into Google's mapping platform as if they were views of real places.
Klimpel builds model horizons, mountain panoramas and sunsets from paper and light, photographs them, and assigns them geographic coordinates online, testing how the algorithms behind search engines decide what counts as a place. Roma Publications (Amsterdam) issued the book in 2015 to coincide with presentations at the Mauvoisin Dam, the Musée de Bagnes in Le Châble, and Fotomuseum Winterthur, where the project ran as situation#15. It carries texts by Thomas Seelig, Bertrand Deslarzes and Melanie Bühler, whose essay is titled "Ghosts on Tour". Roger Willems designed the softcover, 24 × 30 cm.
Klimpel was born in Gliwice, Poland. The Mauvoisin show, curated by Seelig, was her first solo exhibition in Switzerland. Other work includes the publication Still and Berge, a 2018 solo exhibition at TANK, Institut Kunst HGK FHNW, Basel.
