Collages 2020-2022

Collages 2020-2022 gathers three years of collage work by the South African artist Nico Krijno (b. 1981), published by Art Paper Editions as the fullest survey yet of a practice that treats photography as raw material for cutting, layering, and reassembly.

Designed and edited by APE founder Jurgen Maelfeyt, the 448-page paperback compiles images made between 2020 and 2022, presented without captions or narrative sequence, an accumulation rather than a chronology. Studio setups, still lifes, and staged figures are sliced, taped, folded, and rephotographed, producing work the publisher calls "disorientating and fantastical, and at times almost absurd, but wondrous nevertheless." The book was issued in an edition of 1,000 in December 2022.

Krijno moved into visual art around 2008 after working in filmmaking and experimental theatre he now works across photography, collage, painting, sculpture, and performance, mixing analogue and digital tools. Based in South Africa, he has exhibited across Europe, Asia, and the United States and collaborated with Givenchy and Loewe. Collages 2020-2022 is his most extensive book to date with Art Paper Editions, the Ghent publisher known for treating the book as an exhibition space.
