Byways & Through Lines

Byways & Through Lines treats the photobook as a set of loosely related paths rather than a single narrative, letting drawing, scanning, and photography sit side by side without settling into one method.

Pierre Le Hors builds the book from images made by several means at once: pencil marks and paint alongside pictures produced on a flatbed scanner and more conventional photographs, sequenced so that connections between spreads bisect and separate rather than accumulate toward a single subject. Dashwood Books published it in 2013 as a 4-color offset, saddle-stitched softcover of 44 pages, in an edition of 500, as part of its ongoing Dashwood Book Series of small-run artist publications.

Le Hors, born in France in 1981 and based in Brooklyn, graduated from the ICP-Bard MFA program in 2010. Byways & Through Lines followed his earlier Firework Studies (Hassla, 2011) and continues his interest in the photobook as a physical, constructed object rather than a straightforward vehicle for images.
