All About Saul Leiter

All About Saul Leiter surveys the full arc of Saul Leiter's work, from the street photographs he began making in New York in the 1940s to the fashion pictures, nudes and late paintings that followed.

Drawing on some 200 images, the book moves through Leiter's early black-and-white street photography, his pioneering colour work made on Kodachrome and shot largely around his own neighbourhood of the East Village, and the commercial photography he produced for Harper's Bazaar, Esquire and other magazines, interspersed with quotations from the artist. It was compiled with texts by Margit Erb, Pauline Vermare and Motoyuki Shibata, first published in Japan by Seigensha in 2017 and issued the following year in this English-language paperback edition by Thames & Hudson.

Leiter (1923–2013) largely withdrew from professional photography in the 1980s and was rediscovered only after the 2006 monograph Early Color brought his Kodachrome street work to wide attention; All About Saul Leiter extends that rediscovery into a fuller picture of a practice that ran across editorial fashion work, unpublished colour photographs and painting.
