Harold's End
JT LeRoy's Harold's End is a short, illustrated novella about a San Francisco street hustler, an older man, and a snail.
The narrator is Oliver, a youth on Polk Street feeding a heroin habit, who is taken in by a man named Larry. Larry provides shelter and drugs and takes an interest in Oliver's pet snail, Harold. The Last Gasp edition runs to 99 pages and is illustrated with eight watercolor paintings by the Australian artist Cherry Hood, each based on the story's character descriptions. Dave Eggers contributes an introduction. Last Gasp also issued signed copies, signed by LeRoy and Hood.
LeRoy's earlier books, Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, were both international bestsellers, according to Last Gasp. Hood's watercolor of a boy holding a snail in a cup appears in miniature on the black cloth cover.
