Board: Surf/Skate/Snow Graphics
A survey of the graphic art of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, gathering more than four hundred board designs from rare archival material to the work of contemporary studios.
First published in 1997 as Bored, the book treats the board as a printed surface with its own history: hand-painted longboards, the screen-printed skate decks of the 1980s and the digitally produced snowboard graphics of the 1990s. Artists and art directors including Jim Phillips, Erik Brunetti, Todd Francis, Marc McKee and Scott Clum discuss the subcultures that produced the work and its exchanges with music, fashion and graphic design. This expanded 2003 edition adds a section of recent board graphics to the original survey.
Jeremy Leslie is a magazine designer and the author of Issues: New Magazine Design and magCulture; Patrick Burgoyne is the editor of Creative Review and co-author of the Browser series on internet design.
