Scugnizzi

A photobook by the English photographer Brett Lloyd, Scugnizzi documents the street kids who overrun the town beaches of Naples, Italy each summer. The project marked the start of Lloyd's long engagement with the city.

Shot over two extended summers, the black-and-white photographs are vignettes of daily drama on the beach: local kids Lloyd described as "cunning and lively," caught mid-motion against a backdrop of lampposts and festival decorations. The pictures channel the neorealist Italian cinema of the 1940s and the bawdy Naples that drew Caravaggio into exile. The book was edited with Another Man creative director Alister Mackie and designed by Francesca Grassi, published by Dashwood Books, New York, in a softcover first edition limited to 500 copies.

Lloyd went on to spend five years living in and photographing Naples, resulting in his later, more expansive book Napoli, Napoli, Napoli, published by Mörel; Scugnizzi remains the project's origin point.
