Nate Lowman: Before and After
The first comprehensive monograph on the American painter Nate Lowman (b. 1979), published by Aspen Art Press to accompany his survey at the Aspen Art Museum in 2017-18.
The Aspen exhibition, organized by Lowman with the museum's director Heidi Zuckerman, hung more than sixty paintings salon-style across two galleries, from canvases finished in 2003 to work completed weeks before the opening. Most were borrowed from private collections in the United States and Europe. The book reproduces roughly fifteen years of paintings, sculptures and installations in 80 color and 20 black-and-white plates, with texts by Jim Lewis and Zuckerman. Its white jacket carries only the title, the publisher and the ISBN, set in Helvetica.
Lowman builds his paintings out of images already in circulation: bullet holes, smiley faces, pine-tree air fresheners, poppies, crosses, tabloid photographs of Julia Roberts and Joan Rivers. He prints, crops, projects, stains, lacquers and restretches them until the source has been visibly worked over. He lives and works in New York and is represented by David Zwirner.
