Danny Lyon: Message to the Future is the first in-depth examination of Danny Lyon, a central figure in postwar American photography whose immersive, participatory approach to picture-making redefined documentary practice.

The catalogue accompanies the first comprehensive retrospective of Lyon's career in twenty-five years, organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2016 before traveling to San Francisco, Winterthur, and Berlin. Across 288 pages and roughly 250 illustrations, it surveys Lyon's work with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club, and the Texas prison system, alongside his films and photomontages, with essays by Julian Cox and Elisabeth Sussman and further contributions on his work in Knoxville, his films, and his earliest published books.

Lyon (b. 1942) worked as an embedded participant rather than a detached observer, a method he carried from The Bikeriders and Conversations with the Dead through his later work in film and collage; this volume situates that body of work within a single, sustained account of his career.
