III
A book of black-and-white still lifes made on American sidewalks, in which a sheet of paper, spilt milk and a ping-pong ball stand in for the usual subjects of reportage.
Robin Maddock's third book gathers 64 photographs shot in three cities in the United States. The three subjects are small interventions on sun-bathed sidewalks: a floating sheet of paper, spilt milk and a ping-pong ball. Trolley Books frames the work as both a tribute to twentieth-century American photography and an answer to a country already thick with documentary pictures. Maddock had been known for colour documentary work in Britain, and the book continues the long solitary walks behind his earlier work while dropping any duty to describe specific social conditions. Trolley published it in London in 2014 as a hardcover.
Maddock is an English photographer who lives in the south of France. His earlier Trolley titles include Our Kids Are Going to Hell (2009) and God Forgotten Face.
