New Reproductions

New Reproductions is an artist book by the Croatian artist David Maljković (b. 1973, Rijeka), published to accompany his solo exhibition of the same name at the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), Vilnius, from 19 November 2013 to 12 January 2014.

The exhibition presented six new reworkings of earlier Maljković projects — spanning animation, slide projection, collage, and sculpture — assembling filiations between works separated by time and by the artist's shifting concerns with re-reading, remembering, incompleteness, and exhaustion as artistic positions. The book, designed by Åbäke and edited by exhibition curator Jurga Daubaraitė, reproduces Maljković's collaged images alongside poetic and fictional text responses commissioned from Mirene Arsanios, Maria Fusco, Karl Larsson, Sidsel Nelund, and Jonas Žakaitis.

Maljković's work examines the politics of memory and how historical narratives are constructed to serve present-day social and economic agendas, frequently returning to the turbulent twentieth-century history of Croatia and the unrealized futures of Yugoslav modernism. New Reproductions extends that inquiry by literally re-presenting and recombining his own earlier images and objects.
