Stencil Graffiti

Tristan Manco's 2002 survey of stencil graffiti, the first book devoted to the medium and the first to profile Banksy, published by Thames & Hudson at the start of its Street Graphics / Street Art series.

Manco traces the history of the cut stencil from political sloganeering to the spray-can street work of the late 1990s and gathers more than 400 examples from cities around the world, with subjects ranging from the political to the poetic. Featured artists include Blek le Rat, Miss.Tic, Nemo, Western Cell Division, Gerardo Yepiz, Swifty, Bonehead, Dave Kinsey, Atelier Populaire and Shepard Fairey, who describes the stencilled image as "integrated with the texture of the street." The book also follows the medium off the wall onto canvas, clothing and metal, and into style magazines and new media. Compact, square-format paperback with flaps, 405 illustrations.

Manco, a Bristol-based designer and writer, began the project in 1999; it was his first book and was followed by Street Logos, Graffiti Brasil, Street Sketchbook and, in 2020, The Stencil Graffiti Handbook. He also edited Nicholas Ganz's Graffiti World.
