Field Guide to Bugs & Metamorphosis: Glitching Photography by Nina Mangalanayagam, Louise Wolthers

Field Guide to Bugs & Metamorphosis: Glitching Photography

by Nina Mangalanayagam, Louise Wolthers
Art & Theory Publishing · 2025 · Softcover

A pocket field guide to the 2025 Hasselblad Center exhibition, treating the glitch in digital photography as both a technical fault and a critical tool.

The title plays on two meanings of “bugs”: errors in digital photography and insects. The book, 268 pages in a 9 x 19 cm softcover, collects essays by Cathryn Klasto, Joanna Zylinska, Majken Overgaard, Peter Nielsen, Peter Ole Pedersen and Tintin Wulia, with work by 16 international artists. The exhibition ran at the Hasselblad Center, Gothenburg Art Museum, from 8 February to 4 May 2025, and parts travelled to Kunsthal Aarhus that summer.

The editors, Louise Wolthers of the Hasselblad Foundation and Nina Mangalanayagam of HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, curated the show. It grew out of Photography and the Glitch, a research collaboration between HDK-Valand and the Hasselblad Foundation active since 2022. Participating artists include Rashaad Newsome, Jake Elwes and Joana Moll.
