Wonder
A 20-page black-and-white zine of children by Ari Marcopoulos (b. 1957), published by Dashwood Books in New York as one of the house's small stapled Dashwood zines, with a cover portrait of a boy turning from a Power Mac G4 at a cluttered desk.
Marcopoulos works in the zine as a primary format rather than a sideline. The spreads Dashwood reproduces show a child lit by a screen in bed, a boy against a stucco wall in a family reunion T-shirt, a toddler in a diaper, and two boys lying on a deck beside a large print. The pictures are grainy and direct, in the manner of his skate and family work. The library's copy is the second printing, issued by Dashwood in 2021 and signed by the photographer, at 5.25 by 8 inches. Dashwood's distribution arm lists the earlier printing as sold out.
Born in Amsterdam, Marcopoulos moved to New York in 1979 and worked as a printing assistant to Andy Warhol before documenting the city's downtown art, music and skateboarding scenes. He was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and 2010, and Aperture's 2023 survey Ari Marcopoulos: Zines counts more than 200 books and limited-edition zines, many made with Dashwood, ROMA and PPP Editions. The library also holds his Impala, Epiphany, Debris and Conrad McRae.
