Magic City: Die Kunst der Strasse: The Art of the Street
The bilingual catalogue for Magic City: Die Kunst der Strasse, the touring street-art exhibition curated by the New York critic Carlo McCormick that opened in Dresden in October 2016 and travelled on to Munich and Stockholm.
Produced by Semmel Concerts Exhibitions and staged first in the Kultur-Quartier Zeitenströmung in Dresden (1 October 2016 to 12 March 2017), then in the Kleine Olympiahalle in Munich (13 April to 3 September 2017), the show took the city itself as subject and canvas, with more than 40 artists from some 20 countries painting, spraying, pasting and building work in situ. The catalogue, published in German and English by From Here To Fame in 2017, documents the first staging with installation photography and artist profiles alongside McCormick's curatorial text, which frames the exhibition as a celebration of the universal character of cities and their diversity.
Participants ranged from Banksy and Shepard Fairey to the graffiti photographer Martha Cooper and the installation artist Brad Downey, with the works changing from city to city as the show travelled. Edited by Don Karl and Amber Grünhäuser, the volume belongs to From Here To Fame's programme of graffiti and urban-art publishing.
