Fuzz Gathering

Fuzz Gathering is Barry McGee at zine scale: a pocket-sized, cloth-spined fanzine that returns his photographs, collages and drawings to the cheap, hand-assembled format his work came out of in the first place.

Published by Perrotin on the occasion of the exhibition Fuzz Gathering at Perrotin Paris, 16 October to 18 December 2021, the book runs 144 pages at 15.5 x 10.5 cm, offset printed and sewn bound. It gathers McGee's own source photographs alongside the geometric pattern panels, clustered drawings and recurring glum faces that structure his installations, sequenced so the visual language reads as a single accumulating system rather than a set of discrete works. The second print run recorded here carries new front and back cover designs by the artist.

McGee (b. 1966, San Francisco) came up through Bay Area graffiti writing as Twist and studied painting and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Photography has run underneath the whole practice as raw material for the paintings, installations and zines, an archive first surveyed at length in Barry McGee: Reproduction (Aperture, 2022).
