101 Tragedies of Enrique Metinides

by Enrique Metinides ed. Trisha Ziff
Aperture · 2012 · Hardcover with pictorial dust jacket

"101 Tragedies" represents Enrique Metinides's personal selection of 101 key images from over 50 years spent documenting crime scenes, accidents, and catastrophes throughout Mexico City.

Edited by filmmaker and curator Trisha Ziff, this is the first comprehensive overview of Metinides's work in many years and the only monograph comprised entirely of images chosen by the photographer himself. The book features extended captions authored by Metinides that provide his firsthand account of each photograph's subject matter: the street characters, criminals, heroism of emergency workers, and bereaved families he encountered.

Thirty of the selected photographs are paired with their original newsprint tearsheets from Mexico's "nota roja" crime press, which inspired the book's typography and design. This integration of archival material creates a hybrid document that contextualizes Metinides's work within its original journalistic form. Ziff contributes an interpretive essay exploring Metinides's life, artistic vision, and significance within Mexican photojournalism.
