Immersion / Visions

Immersion / Visions is the catalogue for a two-part exhibition of Joel Meyerowitz's work staged at La Piscine, the art and industry museum in Roubaix housed in a former Art Deco swimming pool.

Published by Winch in 2014, the 94-page volume documents the exhibition's two halves: Immersion, installed in the museum's former changing cabins beside the pool basin, gathered pictures grouped by theme (swimming pools, full-length beach portraits, underwater images, skies, and bays) drawn from Meyerowitz's long attention to water as subject. Visions presented a retrospective of his career as a single photographic fresco more than 23 meters long, developed with graphic designer Christian Scheibling.

Meyerowitz (b. 1938) began photographing in color on the streets of New York in the early 1960s and has since worked across street photography, large-format landscape, and still life; this catalogue's pairing of thematic and chronological display reflects a career built on both immediacy and patience.
