The Space of Agonism: Markus Miessen in Conversation with Chantal Mouffe
Conversations between the architect Markus Miessen and the political theorist Chantal Mouffe on agonism, the idea that democratic space depends on conflict as well as consensus.
The dialogues date from 2006 to 2011 and take up conflict-based forms of participation as an alternative spatial practice, Mouffe's concept of conflictual consensus, and strategies for resisting the global spread of neoliberalism. The book includes 23 colour illustrations and artwork and text by Rabih Mroue, and was designed by Zak Group. Parts 1 to 3 were published earlier in Miessen's The Nightmare of Participation.
Miessen (b. Bonn, 1978) is a German architect and writer who edits the Critical Spatial Practice series with Nikolaus Hirsch. Mouffe (b. 1943) is a Belgian political theorist known for her work with Ernesto Laclau and for arguing for a conflict-oriented model of radical democracy. Sternberg Press published the book in Berlin in 2012.
