Tulips by Andrew Miksys

Tulips

by Andrew Miksys
ARÖK Books · 2016 · Hardcover

A photobook by the American photographer Andrew Miksys, Tulips gathers color photographs made in and around a chain of roadside cafes called Tulips scattered across rural Belarus — modest social hubs where village life plays out in the absence of much else.

The book collects 118 color photographs across 164 pages, published in a red, embossed hardcover stamped with a plastic Tulips logo evoking the cafes' own signage, with text by the writer Laimonas Briedis and design by Claudia Ott. It was produced by ARÖK Books, the imprint Miksys runs to publish his own long-term projects, in a first edition of 1000 copies.

Miksys has built a body of work documenting social spaces and vernacular culture across Lithuania and the wider Baltic and Belarusian region, including Disko, on village discotheques in Lithuania, and Baxt, on the Lithuanian Roma community. Tulips extends that documentary project across the border into Belarus.
