Restaurant Drawings
Restaurant Drawings collects Jonathan Monk's drawings and paintings on restaurant receipts, many of them recreations of other artists' work.
Karma published the 552-page book in 2019, in an edition of 1,000, with a text by Pedro Alonzo. It has 531 color images and was issued clothbound. Monk also showed the drawings at Casey Kaplan in New York in 2019. On the bills Monk reproduces works by artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Sherrie Levine, Piero Manzoni, Lawrence Weiner, On Kawara, Christopher Wool and Andy Warhol.
In a June 2019 ARTnews profile, Monk said he started the series about three and a half years earlier, while living in Rome. He draws on the receipt after the meal, posts it on Instagram and offers it for sale for the price of the meal. Monk was born in Leicester in 1969 and lives in Berlin. Earlier works of his that turn on what a piece sells for include the Holiday Paintings, which copy vacation advertisements and sell for the cost of the trip, and a neon sign reading "Do Not Pay More Than $60,000."
