Arnold Odermatt spent over four decades as a Swiss police photographer in the canton of Nidwalden, documenting automobile accidents from 1948 to 1990.

Working with his Rolleiflex camera, he initially photographed crashes to supplement written accident reports and provide evidence for court cases and insurance investigations. Unlike typical documentary police photography, Odermatt's images reveal a sophisticated artistic sensibility, combining clinical attention to detail with an aesthetic appreciation for composition and landscape.

His photographs transform scenes of destruction into unexpectedly haunting and sometimes surreal visual narratives, capturing damaged vehicles as sculptural objects arranged in the Alpine landscape. The work captures consequences of excessive speed, impaired driving, and traffic violations across four decades, presenting melancholic, sometimes darkly comedic, and always atmospheric moments that explore themes of human fragility and societal risk.
