No Place to Hide: Behind the Scenes of Our Emerging Surveillance Society

by Robert O'Harrow, Jr.
Free Press · 2005 · Hardcover

An investigative account of how private data brokers and government agencies built a shared system for tracking Americans after September 11.

O'Harrow follows companies such as Acxiom, ChoicePoint and Seisint, which hold billions of records on individuals and sell or share them with law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He names the result a "security industrial complex" and describes systems like the Matrix, which joined criminal records to commercial data. He also raises problems of inaccurate data and identity theft. Free Press published the book in 2005.

O'Harrow was a reporter for The Washington Post and a Pulitzer Prize finalist for articles on privacy and technology. He received the 2003 Carnegie Mellon Cyber Security Reporting Award. The book comes from his reporting on privacy and technology.
