Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance
J. Paul Getty Museum
· 2009
· Hardcover
The catalogue for the J. Paul Getty Museum's 2009 exhibition of Paul Outerbridge, presenting one hundred photographs from across his career.
Paul Martineau wrote the essay and the chronology. The exhibition ran at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles from March 31 to August 9, 2009. The plates run from the early 1920s and include Cubistic still lifes, advertising work for publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, and nudes in the carbro color process. The Getty lists 59 color and 61 duotone illustrations.
Outerbridge (1896-1958) was an early American master of color photography and of the technically demanding carbro process. The Getty publisher's description calls his work visually fresh, technically adept and decidedly Modernist.
