Collected Works. Study Edition, Volume 3: 1956–1965

by Gordon Parks
Steidl / The Gordon Parks Foundation · 2017 · Clothbound hardcover

The third volume of Gordon Parks’s Collected Works, covering the decade of his civil rights reporting for Life.

The volume spans 1956 to 1965. Its years include the colour photographs Parks made in Alabama in 1956, in the year after the Montgomery bus boycott, following an extended family living under segregation; that work was later published on its own as Segregation Story. The family was persecuted once the essay appeared, and Parks worked afterwards to see them helped.

Peter W. Kunhardt, Jr. and Paul Roth edited the Study Edition, a smaller-format reissue of the 2012 Collected Works. It runs to 1,084 pages across five clothbound volumes, arranged chronologically. The printed cardboard box they ship in is part of the design, not packaging. Texts across the set are by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Deborah Willis, Maurice Berger, Barbara Baker Burrows, Paul Roth and Parks himself. The library holds Volumes 1 to 3.

Notes

Volume 3 of five. The five volumes were issued only as a set, so 9783958292628 is the set’s ISBN and the cover image shows the set’s printed cardboard slipcase. The library holds Volumes 1 to 3 of 5; Volume 4 (1952–1998) and Volume 5 (Life magazine, 1948–1970) are not held. Volume periods read from Steidl’s product photography of the volume spines. Out of print at Steidl. Gordon Parks has no separate official site; The Gordon Parks Foundation, which he co-founded in 2006, is the authoritative estate site.
