Passage: A Work Record is Irving Penn's own 1991 survey of his career, produced with the collaboration of Alexandra Arrowsmith and Nicola Majocchi and introduced by Alexander Liberman.
The book gathers 468 photographs, 397 in black and white and 71 in color, drawn from nearly five decades of fashion, portrait, still-life, and ethnographic work made largely for Vogue. Penn arranged the sequence himself and wrote a commentary on the circumstances behind individual pictures, closing with a detailed work chronology. Alfred A. Knopf published the book with Callaway Editions, whose founder Nicholas Callaway produced it; the black-and-white plates were printed in eleven impressions at Franklin Graphics in Providence, Rhode Island.
Penn spent most of his career photographing for Vogue, working across fashion, portraits of artists and public figures, and still life, and producing the ethnographic "Worlds in a Small Room" pictures and the tradesman portraits later published as Small Trades. Passage arrived when Penn was seventy-four and stands as his own account of that body of work, assembled in his lifetime rather than compiled after it.
Notes
Penn founded the Irving Penn Foundation himself in 2005, before his death in 2009, and it remains the largest repository of his work and the closest thing to an official artist site; used as authors[0].url. Dust jacket has no subtitle (reads only "PASSAGE" / "Irving Penn"); the fuller title "Passage: A Work Record" is the title as catalogued by LOC, WorldCat/OpenLibrary, and every bibliographic listing checked, and is used per the schema's subtitle=null rule. LC control number 91052709 and LC classification TR654.P4513 1991 come from dealer/bibliographic citations (LOC's own catalog UI returned 403 to automated fetch this session and was not confirmed directly); OCLC number and Dewey decimal were not found and are left null. Publisher URL left null: Callaway Editions' current web presence could not be confirmed as authoritative within the research budget. Cover image is a scan of the full front+spine+back dust jacket (verified visually), not a cropped front-only shot; it clearly shows the title, author, and Knopf/Callaway imprint mark. Subjects (LOC): Penn, Irving -- Photograph collections; Fashion photography; Photography, Artistic.
