Sex Magazine #1–10: 2012–2015

The first print edition of Sex, the free, web-native culture magazine founded in New York by the artist Asher Penn, collecting its first ten issues from 2012 to 2015.

Conceived for the browser and distributed at no cost, Sex took its cue from the independent magazine renaissance of the turn of the millennium, titles such as Index, Butt and Made in USA, and channelled the lo-fi, digital-native aesthetic of a still largely unregulated internet. Almost entirely interview-based, its stories gave direct, non-academic voice to artists, designers, musicians, photographers and writers of the post-internet moment. Contributors across the ten issues include Maggie Lee, Brendan Fowler, Jordan Wolfson, Petra Cortright, Amalia Ulman, Eckhaus Latta, Venus X, Bill Strobeck, Laurie Spiegel, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Ratking and Cali Thornhill DeWitt.

Published by powerHouse Books in 2016, the edition functions as a yearbook of a scene that otherwise existed only online and as a record of art and culture at the coming of age of the new millennium. Penn, a New York artist, has also written for Artforum, Interview and Art in America.
