Die Mauer ist Weg!
Die Mauer ist Weg! ("The Wall Is Gone!") revisits the British photographer Mark Power's coverage of Berlin in the days after the fall of the Wall, recasting reportage made in November 1989 as a physical artifact of the event itself.
Self-published in 2014 under Power's own imprint, Globtik Books, to mark the 25th anniversary, the volume is bound as a pastiche of the Berlin newspaper Power bought on the morning after the border opened, its cover embossed into heavy cardboard stock. The early pages read as straight photojournalism before the sequence pulls back from the crowds at the Wall to a quieter, half-emptied East Berlin, and finally to Power's search for Bertolt Brecht's grave; an accompanying essay reflects on chance, choice, and the lessons of the assignment.
Power, a longtime Magnum photographer known for large-scale documentary projects including The Shipping Forecast and 26 Different Endings, made this book from his own archive rather than on assignment, giving it a more personal register within a body of work otherwise defined by commissioned reportage.
