No New Theories
An artist's book that sets xerox abstractions, text fragments and photographs around a long interview, and treats learning and unlearning as a spiritual, political, ecological and cognitive process.
Rasheed places her own writing, autocorrect algorithms and Oulipian poems beside images from her personal archive, popular culture, zoological journals and quranic verses. At the centre is a conversation with Jessica Lynne, co-founder of ARTS.BLACK, reworked with annotations, citations and excerpts from Samuel R. Delany, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Emily Dickinson and others. Printed Matter published it in 2019 as a 256-page sewn softcover in an edition of 1,000.
The book extends the accretive, associative installation work Rasheed is known for. Its title holds that Blackness is a multivalent, porous experience that cannot be neatly theorized. Rasheed and Lynne take up epistemology, pedagogy, research, patience and fatigue.
