Runts
Runts documents an exhibition of new work Robert Rauschenberg made in the final years of his career, shown at PaceWildenstein in New York from January 11 to February 16, 2008.
The Runts series continues Rauschenberg's decades-long method of combining photographic transfer, collage and paint on unconventional supports, layering found street imagery, printed text and everyday objects into dense compositions. The catalogue reproduces the works shown in the exhibition, presenting them as a late chapter in a practice built on assemblage and appropriation.
Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was a central figure in postwar American art, moving between painting, sculpture, printmaking and performance and doing more than any other artist of his generation to blur the line between artwork and everyday material. Runts was among the last bodies of work he completed before his death in May 2008.
