Mapping Systems

by Drake Reed
Endless Editions · 2022 · Softcover, spiral bound, risograph

A risograph zine on everyday surveillance and how to resist it, published in New York by Endless Editions in 2022. Reed wrote it for the BIPOC young adults it names as the main target of surveillance technology.

The zine opens with the instruction not to panic. Reed describes it on page 3 as "a way for us to think about how we can confront surveillance in our everyday life and share resistance movements". Library cataloguers file it under the Black Lives Matter movement. It runs to thirty-five spiral-bound pages, printed in colour on the risograph in an edition of 150. The cover sets the pale silhouette of an aircraft against a mottled red ground above the lower Manhattan skyline, with One World Trade Center at its centre.

Endless Editions was founded in 2014 by Paul John and Anthony Tino to publish artist's books and prints by emerging artists without gallery representation. It prints on a risograph at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in Manhattan. Its titles are held by the MoMA Library, the New York Public Library and the Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Notes

No ISBN. Endless Editions' own site has no catalogue entry for the title, so publisher_url is the Printed Matter listing (stock ID 217885 B), which gives the physical specs but no synopsis. The page-3 quotation and the Black Lives Matter movement subject heading come from a library record surfaced by Google Books (id IBz20AEACAAJ). No artist website or other publications found for Drake Reed; not to be confused with the basketball coach at drakereed.com. Cover is Printed Matter's product photograph cropped to the cover board; the spiral binding is part of the object.
