Landscape

by Gerhard Richter
Hatje Cantz · 2020 · Hardcover

Gerhard Richter: Landscape is a 2020 Hatje Cantz monograph devoted entirely to the landscape theme across Richter's more than sixty-year career, gathering both his figurative and abstract treatments of the subject.

The 220-page book reproduces roughly 190 works and is edited by Lisa Ortner-Kreil, Hubertus Butin, and Cathérine Hug, with essays by Butin, T. J. Demos, Matias Faldbakken, Ortner-Kreil, and Hug; graphic design is by Martha Stutteregger. The publisher describes the book as tracing landscape as a recurring subject across Richter's output, from early photo-based depictions of specific places to later, more abstract responses to nature.

Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 and trained at the city's art academy before leaving for the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he taught painting from 1971 to 1993; he lives in Cologne. The library also holds Painting After All, the catalogue for his 2020 Metropolitan Museum retrospective, and the 1996 artist's book Abstraktes Bild 825-11: 69 Details.
