We Never Sleep
We Never Sleep is the bilingual catalogue of a 2020 group exhibition at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt on espionage and the artists drawn to it. It takes in surveillance, paranoia, cryptography and Cold War secrecy.
The exhibition ran from 24 September 2020 to 10 January 2021. Cristina Ricupero and Alexandra Midal initiated and conceived it. Around 40 artists took part, including Thomas Demand, Simon Denny, Stan Douglas, Charles and Ray Eames, Forensic Architecture, Trevor Paglen, Taryn Simon and Suzanne Treister. Works from the Cold War "golden age" of spying sit beside pieces on digital surveillance, leaks and whistleblowing. The show also drew on spy novel covers and film posters. The title points to spies living undercover, always on the move with no time to rest.
Ricupero, Midal and Katharina Dohm edited the 184-page paperback with flaps. It carries about 100 colour illustrations and texts by Jörg Heiser, Jelena Martinovic, Ricupero, Noam Toran, Marina Otero Verzier and Wladimir Velminski, in English and German. Snoeck of Cologne published it for the Schirn in 2020.
