Time and Space on the Lower East Side

Time and Space on the Lower East Side pairs photographs Brian Rose and Ed Fausty made of Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1980 with pictures Rose returned to shoot from the same vantage points three decades later, tracking one neighborhood's transformation street by street.

Published by Golden Section Publishers with a foreword by the musician and Lower East Side native Suzanne Vega, the 130-page book sets the 1980 and 2010 photographs of Rose and Fausty's original large-format survey against each other in matched pairs, documenting the shift from a landscape of tenement decay, empty lots, and social housing to one reshaped by gentrification. The photographers worked with a view camera on both passes, giving the comparison a consistent, deliberate formality.

Rose, based in New York and later Amsterdam, has built a career on long-duration documentary projects tracking urban change, including his ongoing photographing of the Lower East Side since the 1980s and later work along the former path of the Berlin Wall; Time and Space extends that method to the neighborhood where his career as a documentary photographer began.
