Superstition

Superstition exists in a castle in the sky: a sequence of dream-like landscapes and portraits by Henry Roy, drawn from different times and places, that settles into one coherent, self-evolved atmosphere rather than a single story.

The book was edited and designed by Études Studio and published by Études Books, Paris, as the eighteenth title in their publications series. It runs 48 pages in full-color offset, bound in blue cloth with cover embossing on the front, spine, and back, with text in both English and French. Roy's images move associatively between portraiture and landscape, favoring atmosphere and psychological suggestion over documentary record.

Born in Port-au-Prince and based in Paris since childhood, Roy began publishing photobooks in 1996 with Regards Noirs, a series of portraits of prominent Black French figures made in the manner of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. Superstition is one of six artist's books he has produced since, a body of work that also includes Out of the Blue, Spirit, Mirage, and Ibiza Memories.
