Chron
Chron gathers more than 300 collages and works on paper from about a decade of Sterling Ruby’s practice, in a 496-page hardcover from Karma.
The collages are geometric and layered, built on vivid backgrounds in a range of media, and they draw on his painting and sculpture. Two of his series, DRFTRS and EXHM, are also included. The EXHM works began as heavy cardboard sheets that covered the floor of his studio. Ruby painted them in deep primary hues, and urethane and studio debris built up on them, a technique he still uses. Karma issued the book in an edition of 1,500 and lists it as out of print.
Ruby was born in 1972 and works in Los Angeles. His work includes spray-paint drawings based on graffiti, nail-polish abstractions and inscribed Formica sculptures. Roberta Smith of the New York Times has called him one of the most interesting artists to emerge this century.
