Moisés
Moisés is Mariela Sancari's photobook of portraits of men in their seventies, the age her father would have been had he lived, made after his suicide when Sancari was a teenager and a body was never shown to the family.
Sancari placed a casting call in Mexico City and Buenos Aires for men who resembled her father, Moisés, and photographed dozens of respondents as a way of confronting a death she was never allowed to see confirmed. The book, published by La Fábrica in Madrid in 2015, presents the portraits as two separate volumes with intermingled pages, 64 pages, 26 x 17.5 cm, run through Nova Era's printing. It was named a best photobook of 2015 by TIME, The Guardian, photo-eye, Lensculture, Photobookstore and numerous other critics' lists, and Sancari later self-published a second edition in Barcelona in 2022.
Sancari (b. 1976, Buenos Aires) works in photography, video and installation on questions of memory, absence and identity, and is represented by Patricia Conde Galería in Mexico City. Moisés remains her best-known project, extending a body of work concerned with the impossibility of closure around loss.
