Roxane II by Viviane Sassen

Roxane II

by Viviane Sassen
Oodee · 2017 · Hardcover

Roxane II continues Viviane Sassen's collaborative portrait of her muse Roxane Danset, extending a visual dialogue between photographer and subject that treats the body as a site of shadow, gesture, and mark-making rather than straightforward likeness.

The book gathers a sequence of images made following the pair's first collaboration, Roxane, using dynamic poses, cast shadows, and the imprint of skin against paper to blur the line between performer and performance. An introductory text by the Dutch artist and writer Maria Barnas, who also collaborated with Sassen on Umbra, frames the work as a shared self-portrait in which two identities become difficult to separate. Oodee published the book as a cloth hardcover.

Sassen, a Dutch photographer who trained as a fashion designer before turning to photography, works across fashion, fine art, and documentary registers, often returning to the human body as abstracted color and form; her other books include Roxane, Umbra, and Pikin Slee.
