All I Ever Wanted
All I Ever Wanted is a photobook by the Dutch artist Hester Scheurwater that turns the aesthetics of the selfie into a study of exhibitionism and voyeurism.
The book is structured as a set of leaflets, likened by the publisher to the different rooms of a house, each carrying its own atmosphere of the artist's inner world, fears, and desires, and raising the question of whether its female subject is just another object or in control of the gaze pointed at her. Patrick Remy wrote the introduction, translated into English by Frederique Destribats. Editions Bessard published the book in Paris in 2015 as a signed, numbered edition of 500 copies.
Scheurwater was born in 1971 in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. Reviewing the book, the critic Loring Knoblauch called it a natural extension of Kim Kardashian's Selfish, seen with a more skeptical, artist's eye, exposing the poles of exhibitionism and voyeurism that now dominate self-image.
