Night Walk by Ken Schles

Night Walk

by Ken Schles
Steidl · 2015

Night Walk gathers Ken Schles's photographs of the East Village and its underground art and club scene in the 1980s, his second book after Invisible City.

Schles returned to his archive twenty-five years after Invisible City (1988) and arranged the pictures as one long night on foot through Downtown New York. The book holds 106 photographs printed in quadratone, with texts by Schles and T.S. Eliot. Schles designed the book and Sarah Winter designed the cover. Steidl published it as a clothbound hardcover with a dust jacket, in a first edition in December 2014 and a second in September 2016. A review quoted on Schles's site reads the sequence as a single night running from party to party and club to club until morning.

Schles was born in Brooklyn in 1960 and studied at Cooper Union and with Lisette Model. In the 1980s he lived in a tenement in the East Village and photographed the club and art scene around him. When Invisible City was reissued in 2014, TIME named it a photobook of the year, and it gave Night Walk the same distinction. He is the author of five photographic monographs.
