Things Left Unsaid

Paul Seawright turns his camera on the interiors of American and European television news studios, the spaces where footage of distant wars is edited into broadcast narrative.

The photographs record the sets, lighting rigs and control desks behind the news anchor's frame, drawing on Paul Virilio's writing on electronic warfare to examine how conflict is mediated and made presentable for a viewing public. The work was shown as Making News: Things Left Unsaid at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, in 2014, before traveling to The Model, Sligo, and the Ulster Museum in 2015, with an exhibition catalogue produced for the tour.

The project continues Seawright's long-running interest in the landscapes and infrastructure of conflict, following earlier bodies of work made in Belfast and Afghanistan that likewise withhold the image of violence itself in favor of its surrounding architecture.
