Paul Mpagi Sepuya
Paul Mpagi Sepuya is the self-titled monograph on the Los Angeles photographer. Aperture and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis copublished it on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the museum.
Sepuya mostly makes studio photographs of friends, artists, collaborators and himself. His method leans on collage, layering, fragmentation and mirror images, and it leaves the making visible: marks on the mirror surfaces, and the tripods, backdrops and lenses of the studio. Aperture calls the book the first publication of his work to be released widely, although artist books have long been part of his practice. Contributors include Wassan Al-Khudhairi, chief curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, along with Malik Gaines, Lucy Gallun, Ariel Goldberg, Evan Moffitt and Grace Wales Bonner.
Sepuya's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Aperture lists a solo show at Foam in Amsterdam in 2018, the 2019 Whitney Biennial and Being: New Photography 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art among his recent exhibitions.
