Richard Serra Early Work
Richard Serra: Early Work is the catalogue of a 2013 exhibition at David Zwirner in New York of Serra's work from 1966 to 1971, the years of his experiments with vulcanized rubber, neon and lead alongside early pieces in steel.
Hal Foster contributes an essay. The book also has installation views, stills from Serra's early films, and archival texts and reviews from the period. McCall Associates designed it and Steidl printed it in Göttingen: 340 pages, hardcover, with 19 colour and 175 tritone reproductions, published jointly by David Zwirner and Steidl. The exhibition ran from 12 April to 15 June 2013 at 537 West 20th Street, and its checklist includes To Lift (1967, vulcanized rubber) and One Ton Prop (House of Cards) (1969, lead).
Serra (1938–2024) was born in San Francisco and lived and worked in New York, on the North Fork of Long Island and in Nova Scotia. His first significant solo exhibition was at the Leo Castelli Warehouse in New York in 1969. Steidl's Serra list also includes Notebooks, Vertical and Horizontal Reversals and Forged Steel.
