Libya: Inch by Inch, House by House, Alley by Alley

Giovanna Silva's Inch by Inch, House by House, Alley by Alley photographs Libya in the years after the 2011 uprising and civil war, its title borrowed from the language of urban siege warfare.

The book belongs to a series of publications conceived by Silva and published by Mousse under the heading Narratives, each volume built around photographs of a country at war or in crisis. Silva, an architect as well as a photographer, brings an interest in the built environment to the work, tracking how conflict is written into streets, houses and city blocks rather than staged as spectacle.

The book sits within Silva's broader practice of photographing cities under political and architectural pressure, work that has appeared in Domus and San Rocco alongside her independent publications.
