Lorna Simpson

by Lorna Simpson
Phaidon Press

Lorna Simpson is Phaidon's monograph on the multimedia artist, revised and expanded to bring the record of her career up to date.

This edition belongs to the Phaidon Contemporary Artists Series and is a 240-page hardback. It revises the first edition and adds a new essay by Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Senior Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The other authors are Thelma Golden, Kellie Jones and Chrissie Iles. The book runs up to Simpson's most recent work at the time, which includes her portrait of Rihanna for the January 2021 cover of Essence.

Phaidon describes Simpson as known for a pioneering approach to conceptual photography. In 1993 she was, by its account, the first African-American woman to show in the Venice Biennale and to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
